Steam-punk, Mixed Metals and More!

STEAM-PUNK!!
It’s such an interesting genre of jewelry design and genre period! It’s a fusion of the old world in a futuristic setting filled with machinery that’s been broken down and reassembled. In my attempt to tap into the corners of my mind and play with steam punk, I pulled the following pieces out of my head and on to my workshop table!
The first:
a steam-punk necklace that I’ve called “Apocalypse” It features gear parts, clock parts, Elizabethan coins, crosses and a clock face as its center of focus. All of course in antiqued metal colors with a splash of color from some thunder polish beads.
Another Steam-punk-esque necklace that features a heart-shaped clock face, some cage beads, foil glass beads and gears. This piece was featured in a previous post* and is finally completed.

A more simple yet elegant steam-punk necklace that’s all about the gears, I really like this piece. And it features a couple swarovski crystals to give it a bit of shine.

And of course, earrings!!!

Now, I don’t know if these would be considered “Steam-punk” but these earrings I really like. Long hanging copper birds with a touch of color at the top

and a solitary black bird is the focal piece of this short lariat-inspired necklace. I believe I named it
“Night Wing.”

Next we move on to my semi-precious earrings…

and a semiprecious bracelet that I made with men in mind.
Though I’m not sure if guys would like it =\

And last, but not least….
More Mixed Mediums!!

Here’s the Blue/Black/Silver combination I had to tweak, in addition to…a sneak peak at

Two new FABULOUS color combinations!!

On the left we’ve got a combo of Pink/Red/Purple/Blue & Gold
and on the right Blue/Pink/Lime/Green & Silver.

Once again, I’m doing my best to photograph, price and post to the website that you can find at the top right this webpage or here

New Pieces @ The Workshop

Hello Darling PPI Followers!
As of late there have been some developments that I’d like to get into. First and foremost, I would like to apologize once again for my tardy blogposts. I’ve been working hard towards finding work, among other things and I haven’t had time to document the progress of PPI. Well, here it is:
We’re moving slowly. =(
This past summer has been a bust. With several vending opportunities going south, and my time becoming increasingly consumed with stress from various directions, I didn’t think that I’d actually get back into creating but LO! I got a request from a friend for an order of waist beads. Now, while I normally don’t do waist beads, I’m not completely ignorant of them. For those of you that may not know the history:
Waist beads are an age old African tradition and are worn for vast reasons and purposes to celebrate femininity, healing, spirituality, power, balancing, attracting and keeping a mate, rites of passage, rejuvenation, initiations, first menses, energy, and body shaping. African women have traditionally worn waist beads beneath their clothing placed beneath the belly button and can be single or multiple strands.  Other cultures proudly display the beads over their clothes or on bare midriffs. The art of adorning ones self has been practiced since the beginning of time. Today waist beads are alive and well in the United States, where they are worn as a form of self expression and style, but can still have any significance the wearer chooses.
So with that being said, I was excited for the challenge to make these waist beads. My finished product is the picture below of the waist beads quadrupled up so you can see the different colors and patterns.
my first attempt at waist beads
Was it time consuming? Sorta-kinda. Seed beads are NOT the best materials to work with in a small working space if you don’t have a bead spinner. And during the assembly, the beads slipped and fell off about 20% of the wire…which set me back because I had to find as many of the beads as possible AND put them back on. But at the end of it all, I was pleased with it, as was the woman (whose birthday is today) requested. As it was my first time ever making it, I learned from my trials and tribs how to go about making it for another person. First off, these will be custom pieces by request only. I may make swatches to give an idea of color combos and I’ll give in-depth info about them as no two people want them for the same reason.

double strand purple, yellow & gold glass seed bead waist beads

BUT YES – aside from the waist beads, I haven’t made many new pieces. Last night, however, I made a break through and finally went through my “to-do” box (yes, I have a to-do box filled with bagged beads) and got some projects done.

new pieces!

Dissecting this batch of new accessories (some of which I created last night, others, I’ve just never mentioned before), I’m going to start with this little doo-hickey. It’s a bracelet made of antiqued copper chain and a really cool toggle I bought ages ago.

Initially I was going to make it into a lariat type necklace, but then decided against it and layered it up for this cool (and moderately heavy) bracelet.  Next up is this pretty bright blue bracelet I made with swarovski crystals and swarovski crystal elements.

pretty pearly sparkly bracelet
It took me a while to come to this as the original design looked NOTHING like this, but that coin pearls and sparkly crystals make this aquarian piece really…shiny. =]

Moving back to the dark antique-ness of copper, we’ve got a necklace that was intended for the chain of the bracelet in the first photo made with this really cool textured chain. You can’t tell but the chain itself looks like rope and then the toggle has all these nice swirly filigree on it, so I thought it looks great. The toggle doubles as the pendant so BOOM!

Then there’s this piece…
So this necklace initially started out as a three strand piece with alternating strands featuring semi-precious chips. After much deliberating, I decided to make it ten times simpler. And I like it this way.
necklace featuring quartz, flourite, adventurine, prehnite and labradorite chips
With the pieces that I used in the original necklace, I’ve decided to work that into a bracelet, which I haven’t completed. These babies below, are the earrings to a similar necklace that I made and is posted here

I’ve also finally finished up a couple of those mixed medium necklaces. You would think that making them would be easy…but it’s not. Depending on what size chains are used, it can be a bit difficult to work with, but I got a handle on it and came up with these two. I’ve got one more to complete and two more to design (featuring multiple colors).

mixed medium: gold, pink and red

mixed medium: gold, green and lime
I’ve also got this Steampunk-esque necklace to complete

the necklace features glass beads, antique copper cage & spiral beads, and gear pendants =)
Finally, I’ve come to the newest pieces: RINGS! I’m trying to get back on my ring game, cause well, people like rings. The first completed ring I’ve made is this felt red rose, the first of my Alice in Wonderland inspired felt jewelry collection.

The next ring was this gold bow. Who doesn’t love bows? lol

And that’s about it for now! I will be doing a giveaway and an auction on ebay very soon, so please stay tuned, as I will be releasing the details for both in a couple weeks. I’m also going to be working more with colors and producing new necklaces AND finally hair accessories,
so you don’t want to miss it!
love,
-Alja

Production, Production & Production!

Hello Darling Readers!

Since we last spoke, I talked about all the new pieces that I created from the PPI workshop. Since then, my production on new items has slowed down, however, I’ve been working on displays and other elements for selling my pieces.

Which leads me to a bout of not so great news – I’m not sure when I will be able to participate in the Artists & Fleas flea market. Being highly optimistic, I signed up to vend at an upcoming event and the organizers have failed to contact me back, thereby stranding me on the weekend I intended on using to sell. Now that is too late for me to book the flea and I will have to do with the following weekend or the weekend after that, which pushes me from selling in July to September. This is bothersome as I will have to return to “real” work in September…which ultimately leads to a slow down on the Pretty Poet Ink front.

But! I will try to prevail.

Anyhow, I wouldn’t leave you stranded, so here’s a few photos of pieces I have completed:

I’ve been trying to figure out what to call this, but I’ve settled with ‘Prince of Persia’ for now any way

it all started with these earrings. When I made then, I just felt like going ahead with a necklace and so

the two look really nice together.

Also made some chandelier earrings with Fern Green swarovski crystals

a pair of earrings with blue jade & yellow turquoise

a pair of steam-punky earrings
a remake of my Greco-Roman earring and bracelet

and another pair of chandelier earrings with Coral Red swarovski.
I’ve listed them all on the website in the ‘Coming Soon’ section, which is completely new. Now, instead of just waiting until I’ve got all the info, I’ll be posting pieces as I make them and make ’em available after they’re bagged and tagged.
This little number is a piece I’m working on

as well as these experimentations with felt flowers and bunnies. Can you guess the theme? *hint: story book, white rabbits, red & white roses*
I will keep you updated on my selling events…even if I have to create an ‘End of Summer’ jewelry party and then go to MagCon in MD. =/
W/love

Adding to the Inventory

WELCOME BACK!!
Hello there darling PPI followers! As you can see, I’ve been working on getting some more pieces together for my flee market @ Artists and Fleas coming up and so, here are a few more pieces that I’ve added to the collection!
Above is a photo of more additions to the ‘Mixed Medium’ necklace family. Before, it was just silver & gold or purple/silver/black. Now, I’ve added a blue/black/silver necklace, a green/lime/gold necklace, and a red/pink/gold necklace. I intend on making one maybe of just colors…in the near future!

I’ve also finally broken down and made some mens’ jewelry, in addition to something bridal and another oceanic piece…we’ll break down those pieces in a few…

Next, I’ve got a really long (maybe 40 inches) necklace that I made with some semi-precious chips along the chain. I really like it, but will continue to tweak it as I go…

Amethyst earrings! These are some sparkly amethyst earrings I made with glass beads. I am a february baby, so amethyst is a color that I’m always looking at!

Next up are these tribal, Earth Nation feeling earrings. If you know me, you know I love Avatar, the Last Airbender and I feel these are some really tough Toph-esque earrings. I will be making a necklace to match these earrings, so stay tuned…. =D

Playing around with some beads that I’ve got lead to these earrings! I love the blend of light-not-so-light-and-dark beads that work really well together…

And I also love the way these earrings came together with this kind of copperish blend…

So we know I love turquoise, magnesite or dyed howlite. So, with these really large magnesite beads, I’ve created a necklace including some howlite and faceted rhodonite beads.

SUEDE braided bracelet – adjustable & unisex darling…

And like Mixed Medium, I added to the ‘Lock & Key’ earring family by creating three new pairs, and these are all interchangeable so long as your pair a key with a lock (duh!)

And with the following earrings, I’ve changed them three times before finally loving this:

and I think I posted this necklace before, but it wasn’t finished. I removed some of the length and I think it looks tons better!

Next is my Bridal Bracelet – made with swarovski crystals, glass beads, pearls and rhinstones and a little something blue!
Another charm bracelet with a cage and the charms that say ‘joy’ and ‘live’

A mens’ necklace- adjustable with bone & wood beads

my oceanic necklace – a giant seahorse with some pearls & crystals in sea-friendly colors

a Ram’s head men’s necklace – again made with bone beads, and adjustable suede cording

And finally, a pair of earrings to match my ‘God Save the Queen’ bracelet of long ago.
AND there will be more to come! As it is, I will be playing with veils soon as well as creating more and more pieces. I’ve moved the date from my intended flea from July to August =(  but it’s giving me more time to nab some cool displays, make more pieces and have lots of options for my buyers!! =D
Until later lovelies,
-Alja

Getting Back to Business!

HEY ALL!

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus to work on some other projects, but I feel the time has come for me to make some new creations, as I may be doing a flee market this summer in Williamsburg, Brooklyn!
These are some pieces that I completed a couple weeks ago, but have yet to show for your review:

This bracelet I’ve named “Winterfell” as it reminds me of the area in the North where the Starks of the novel “A Game of Thrones” (and series ‘A Song of Fire & Ice’) reside.

These little dangles are inspired by my love of Ancient Egyptian culture. so I’ve named them…Nefer, which is the Ancient Egyptian word for “to be beautiful.” I may change the name…I’m not sure I’m quite sold on it.

These little dangles are called “Fae,” as they are inspired by my love of fantasy and lore…

This bracelet I’ve made is called “Tiger’s Cage.” It features gold boxes and tiger striped lampwork glass beads.

And last but not least, there are my Gold barrel beads, but with a magnesite twist!

I hope you enjoyed and remember to check back here, at the store and on the twitter account for more news!

Recap!

Hey Darlings!
So, I meant to give you a re-cap of the jewelry party, but I’ve been so swamp on organizing all the goods, that I’ve been backed up in what I’ve been meaning to write. While I unfortunately did not get a chance to take out pictures of my crafty display, I did do a minor recreation:
I always knew in my head that I wanted to do a Dinner Party theme…because, well people are consuming my work in a way. And I think it’s innovative and a great way to use these supplies I have at home until I get the money up to buy the professional displays.
Anyhow, I had this tree displaying my earrings. I also placed one-side of the earring, that way more of my different designs could be seen. And in the nest, were all the ear-stoppers so that they wouldn’t be lost.

I then used the glass stems as a display for my bracelets, kind of like the way you have those wine glass jewelry, instead, well, REAL jewelry.
Obviously, the plates were to hold the bigger items of consumption: NECKLACES! And mainly the larger necklaces.
I also made my own earring cards as I’ve seen done online. They worked really well and I had them randomly placed around the table for added decor…

And in a stroke of genius, I decided to use some hor d’oeuvre platters to display smaller necklaces or chains, where the pendant are more of the focal point than the actual necklace.
and THAT was my display! I promise that if there is another jewelry party (*crosses fingers*), I will take photos. I think all my nerves and flustering on that day got the best of me…and my camera was in my POCKET! *growls* But, I’ll get it right next time.
Any who, even though I didn’t get to use it, I also had a credit card reader! YES! I’m doing big-girl things now! No one wanted to use their plastic, so it just sat there, but better safe than sorry!
Just plug into the iTouch and done!
NOW – A MOMENT FOR ALL THE PIECES THAT HAS LEFT US:

Just a Taste Earrings: I sold my second set of these earrings, along with

and last, but not least
the Luxor Priestess Necklace is guarding someone with the ways of Ancient Egypt!
**REMEMBER** If there’s something off this list that you want, make sure to hit up the PPI facebook page and send a request. If it can be made, then it will be!
Lastly, I created three new babies that I will be posting soon:

‘copper shock’

‘burnt sun’

and a variation of my gifted ‘jaded earth’ earrings.

AND THAT’S A WRAP!

-Alja
